  • North American International Auto Show Announces 2022 Dates

    The North American International Auto Show on Tuesday said the 2022 show will take place Sept. 14-25 in downtown Detroit.

    Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association and the NAIAS, confirmed the dates during the 2022 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards presentation. Media/tech days will take place Sept. 14-15, the Charity Preview is scheduled for Sept. 16 and public days will run Sept. 17-25.

  • MICHauto Investors Among CADIA 2021 Impact Award Winners

    On Friday, Nov. 12, the Center for Automotive Diversity, Inclusion, and Advancement (CADIA) announced winners of their annual Impact Awards. The CADIA Impact Awards recognize excellence in and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the automotive industry. This year, CADIA received more than 70 nominations for awards in four categories: Leadership Commitment, Systemic Change, Creating Inclusive Cultures, and Champion for Diverse Talent. Winners and runner ups of this year’s awards included several MICHauto investor companies, including American Axle and Manufacturing Inc., BrogWarner, Brose, Stellantis, and Shape Corp.

  • President Biden Celebrates Michigan’s Global Automotive Leadership At GM’s Factory Zero

    President Joe Biden came to Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 17, to help open GM’s retooled Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center. The President was joined by GM CEO Mary Barra, United Auto Workers President Ray Curry, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, members of Michigan’s Congressional delegation, MICHauto executive director Glenn Stevens Jr., and more at the event. It is GM’s second EV plant so far within its North American footprint and is central to the company’s plan to pivot from gas and diesel-powered vehicles to EVs.

  • U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $4 Million to Support Electric Vehicle Manufacturing in Detroit, Michigan

    U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $4 million grant to the city of Detroit, Michigan, to reconstruct deteriorating roads in support of an automobile manufacturing plant that will begin producing all-electrical vehicles. This EDA project, to be matched with $6.7 million in local funds, is expected to create 810 jobs, retain 300 jobs, and generate $45 million in private investment.

    Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT), a citywide summer program led by the city of Detroit that trains and employs young adults who are residents of the city, in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, offered a unique opportunity to 30 participants to learn app design and coding. A team of Apple employees guided the young participants throughout the program as they learned how to build an app prototype that solved a local community challenge in the areas of hip hop, sustainable fashion, and mobility.

    On Aug. 25, MICHauto hosted Town Hall: The Push to End Distracted Driving in Michigan. Participants were called to action by Steven Kiefer, chairman of the Kiefer Foundation, Rep. Mari Manoogian (D-Birmingham), and Jennifer Smith, chief executive officer and co-founder of StopDistractions.org to push the passage of hands-free legislation – House Bills 4277, 4278, and 4279 to protect Michigan drivers.     How can students and young professionals best prepare to contribute to this growing, global, inclusive, and high-tech industry in the face of a major transformation? Students in the summer cohort of the Global Talent Accelerator (GTA), run by Global Detroit, learned the answer to that question in an open workshop lead by Carolyn Sauer, senior director of MICHauto. GTA is a soft-skills bootcamp for a small group of 15-20 STEM students. Through the summer program, students learn skills from experts on how to brand themselves in the U.S. job market, attend events and workshops tailored to improve their chances of employment, and get career coaching from professionals and mentors.
