WIN Reports: Positive Employment Trend Continues, Q4 2014 Southeast Michigan employment reached new levels

DETROIT, Mich. – Southeast Michigan has experienced modest employment gains in Q4 2014 and continued to exceed pre-recession levels seen in mid-to-late 2008 with nearly 2.3 million individuals employed. The findings, among others, can be found in data compiled by the Workforce Intelligence Network of Southeast Michigan (WIN) for its 4th quarter market report.

Fourth quarter 2014 was a time of sustained job growth, with employment rising by more than 16,000 individuals since Q3 2014, and more than 20,000 jobs added since Q4 2013. While quarterly growth neared 1 percent and the positive trend in employment continued, there was a modest decline in the labor force. Despite the decline commonly seen in early fall until spring, the labor force is generally stable with typical peaks and troughs throughout the business cycle.

For Q4 2014, WIN also found the top occupational clusters to be:

  • Retail and Hospitality (18,382 postings)
  • Health Care (9,953 postings)
  • IT (10,626 postings)
  • Engineers and Designers (5,578 postings)
  • Skilled and Trades Technicians (2,693 postings)

And the top in-demand jobs:

  • Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers (4,123 postings)
  • Retail Salespersons (2,713 postings)
  • Registered Nurses (2,713 postings)
  • Software Developers, Applications (2,480 postings)
  • Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products (1,957 postings)

“Employment growth reached new levels not seen since before the recession in 2008,” said Lisa Katz, executive director, WIN. “Growing employment coupled with increased postings and consumer confidence is a signal that employers will likely continue to hire into early 2015, adding to the already-growing levels of employment in the region.”
