Advisory Board

The MICHauto Advisory Board will serve as strategic advisors with oversight of MICHauto’s direction and activities. Leaders from industry, professional services, and educational institutions are participating. They include Chip McClure, Allan D. Gilmour, Richard Hanna, Timothy M. Manganello, Thomas J. Manganello, Stephen Polk. Sandy K. Baruah, President and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, will represent the Detroit Regional Chamber on the Advisory Board.


Charles G. “Chip” McClure

Chairman of the Board, CEO and president
Meritor, Inc.

Charles G. “Chip” McClure is chairman of the Board, CEO and president of Meritor, Inc. He joined the company in 2004.

Prior to this position, McClure served as CEO, president and a member of the Board of Federal-Mogul Corp. McClure joined Federal-Mogul in 2001 as president, COO and a member of the Board.

Before joining Federal-Mogul, McClure served as president, CEO and a member of the Board of Detroit Diesel. He joined Detroit Diesel in 1997 after 14 years in a variety of management positions with Johnson Controls including vice president and managing director of the company’s European and South African operations during which time he was located in Dusseldorf, Germany. McClure later became president of the company’s Americas region.

He also previously held management positions at Hoover Universal and Ford as a heavy-duty truck sales engineer and field service engineer. From 1975 until 1979, McClure served as an officer on a U.S. Navy destroyer. McClure holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

He was recently appointed by the Board of Directors of General Cable Corporation to serve as an independent director on the Board’s Audit, Compensation and Corporate Governance committees. He was also recently named first vice chair of the Detroit Regional Chamber Board of Directors for the 2010-2011 program year and co-chair of the 2011 Mackinac Policy Conference. In this position, McClure will help lead a charge that will bring viability back to U.S. manufacturing. Also in 2010, he was recognized as one of Northwood University’s six nationally known business leaders. In 2007, McClure was named “Legend CEO” by Automation Alley – a business technology consortium in southeastern Michigan, and was ranked as one of Detroit’s Most Powerful People in 2006 by Crain’s Detroit Business.

McClure is a member of the Business Roundtable, and is active on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, R.L. Polk and Company, Business Leaders for Michigan, Horizons Upward Bound and Invest Detroit.


Allan D. Gilmour

President
Wayne State University

Allan D. Gilmour was unanimously elected by the Board of Governors on January 18, 2011 to serve as Wayne State University’s 11th President.

President Gilmour, a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan, spent most of his career at Ford Motor Company, from which he retired in 1995 as vice chairman. He rejoined the company as vice chairman in 2002, and retired again in 2005. Gilmour is chairman of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and serves on the boards of the Detroit Regional Chamber, Business Leaders for Michigan, Downtown Detroit Partnership, the Detroit Zoo, and Citizens Research Council.

Previously, he was a member of the boards of Ford Motor Co., DTE Energy Company, US West, MediaOne Group, Prudential Financial, Dow Chemical, Whirlpool and Universal Technical Institute. He also was chairman and a trustee of Henry Ford Health System and its foundation and a trustee of the University of Detroit Mercy, the Detroit Institute of Arts, St. Johnsbury (Vt.) Academy, and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan.

Born on June 17, 1934, Gilmour was raised on his family’s dairy farm in Barnet, Vt. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan. While working toward a doctoral degree in finance at U-M, Gilmour was a teaching fellow.


Richard Hanna

Global automotive and US assurance leader
PwC

Rick is PwC’s global automotive leader and U.S. automotive assurance leader. He has served a number of public and multinational companies, including a Fortune 10 company and Fortune 50 company as global engagement partner.

Rick has extensive expertise in the automotive industry having worked with both automakers and suppliers with their SEC reporting matters, preparation of financial statements prepared in accordance with international accounting standards, and development of international standard governance policies and practices. In addition, he has led multinational engagement teams that leveraged major international and US shared service centers in the audits of both the consolidated US GAAP and local statutory financial statements, worked through major acquisition and disposal transactions and implemented major IT system implementations.

Rick has significant experience in working with Audit Committees and executive management and is experienced in managing teams based in diverse cultures and locations. Rick has established a personal network of professionals in PwC’s National Office and international offices.

Rick spent two years in PwC’s London office and later served as the partner-in-charge of the firm’s Russian audit and business advisory practice, where he was responsible for people development and the development of the Russian audit practice. Rick also served as the global engagement partner for several major Russian international entities during Russia’s privatization period. Upon his return to the U.S. and until his relocation to Detroit, he served as the office managing partner in Peoria, Illinois, USA. He has also served as a member of the firm’s strategy committee and extended leadership team in 2006 and 2007.

Rick earned a Master of Arts degree in accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University. His professional affiliations include: American Institute of Certified Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, and Illinois CPA Society.


Timothy M. Manganello

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
BorgWarner Inc.

Timothy M. Manganello has been chairman and chief executive officer of BorgWarner Inc. since June 2003.

Mr. Manganello began his career in the automotive industry in 1973. He was named to his current position in February 2003, after having served for one year as president and chief operating officer. Prior to holding the position of COO, he was executive vice president of the company and served as president and general manager of BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems from January 1999 to 2002.

During his career at BorgWarner, he has held senior management positions in operations, sales, and business development.

Before joining BorgWarner in 1989, Mr. Manganello held product engineering management positions at Chrysler Corporation from 1973 to 1981, and sales management positions at PT Components-Link Belt from 1981 to 1988.

A resident of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Mr. Manganello holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and is a graduate of the Chrysler Institute program.

He is a member of the board of directors of Bemis Co., Inc. (NYSE), and the Detroit Branch Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He is also a member of the University of Michigan College of Engineering’s National Advisory Committee; the chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for the Manufacturer’s Alliance/MAPI; and is on the Governor’s Board of the World Economic Forum.


Thomas J. Manganello

Tom Manganello serves as chair of Warner’s Automotive Industry Group. His practice includes supplier-focused automotive contracts and commercial supply chain issues, dispute resolution and litigation, as well as product liability and general negligence law.

Representative Experience:

 

  • Legal counsel to the Original Equipment Supplier Association, O.E Sales and Marketing Council
  • 2007 Co-founder of MICHauto, Michigan’s only membership-based automotive industry cluster association focused on sustaining and growing Michigan’s automotive industry cluster
  • Maintained a 90% win rate in all product liability, premises liability and automobile negligence trial law proceedings as lead counsel representing major automotive clients in cases nationwide. Provided aggressive legal advocacy and representation for auto manufacturers and tried over 30 cases to verdict in state/appellate/federal courts across the U.S.
  • Selected as co-coordinator of major automotive seat litigation project and as national counsel for automotive transmission-inadvertent vehicle movement cases and heavy truck cab design allegation
  • Developed vigorous trial and case management strategies for multi-state litigation involving product liability, including retaining and managing outside counsel, coordinating expert witnesses (medical and technical) and advising client executives on case selection and motion filings to maximize opportunities for favorable interpretation of the law

Stephen Polk

Chairman, President and CEO
R. L. Polk & Co.

Stephen Polk, Chairman, President and CEO of R. L. Polk & Co., is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the company. Stephen continues the family legacy of his great grandfather, Ralph Lane Polk, in providing leadership to ensure the future success of the company.

To that end, Stephen restructured the organization around customer needs and accelerated the development of new products and services. By exiting less profitable businesses and streamlining operations, he has sharpened the company’s focus: to be the number one provider of information solutions for the automotive marketplace.

Since joining Polk in 1981, Stephen held various positions throughout the organization until he was elected president in 1990. He added the title of Chief Operating Officer two years later and was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1994.


Sandy K. Baruah

President and Chief Executive Officer
Detroit Regional Chamber

The Honorable Sandy K. Baruah is President and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, one of the largest in the country. Under Baruah’s leadership, the Chamber focuses on three strategic priorities: economic development, regional collaboration and education reform.

Baruah joined the Chamber in 2010 after a distinguished career in Washington, D.C. He served as President George W. Bush’s last Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). In this role, he was responsible for the SBA’s $18 billion small business loan portfolio. Baruah was one of the senior officials shaping the federal government’s response to the 2008 credit crisis and assistance to the U.S. automotive industry.

Prior to leading the SBA, Baruah served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce. He led the Economic Development Administration (EDA), served as the Senior Advisor to Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez regarding the 2010 Census and represented the U.S. at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France.

Before serving in the Bush Administration, Baruah was a corporate mergers and acquisitions consultant for the Performance Consulting Group. He also served in the administration of President George H. W. Bush (1989–1993) and was on the staff of U.S. Senator Bob Packwood (Oregon).

After leaving government service in early 2009, he was a Distinguished Fellow at the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, a Washington, D.C.- based think tank comprised of corporate CEOs, university presidents and labor leaders.

Baruah holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon and a Master of Business Administration from Willamette University. Sandy and Lisa Baruah have one son and live in a household run by the family pets.
