MichAuto Statement on Proposed Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

February 12, 2025

MichAuto Executive Director Glenn Stevens Jr. discusses the impact of the proposed steel and aluminum tariffs and the potential economic consequences they present.

Read Stevens’ statement below.

Glenn Stevens Jr.

“Tariffs must not add undue pressure on the supply chain or input costs for manufacturers. They must enhance – not threaten – Michigan’s global competitiveness, especially in the automotive and mobility industry. The newly proposed steel and aluminum tariffs demand careful consideration in this regard.

There is precedent suggesting that similar tariffs during the first Trump Administration had mixed effects. While those tariffs led to some job growth in the U.S. steel industry, they also came with broader economic consequences, including increased costs that weighed down overall manufacturing employment. The success of our state and nation’s automotive leadership has been built, in part, on highly resilient, efficient, and deeply integrated supply chains across North America. Any disruption to these supply chains carries significant implications.

MichAuto will continue monitoring trade decisions coming out of Washington and remain in close contact with industry leaders and investors on how to proceed in the best interest of our signature industry.”
