The reaction to Trump’s move from other parts of the auto world is positive so far as well. Glenn Stevens, executive director of MichAuto at the Detroit Regional Chamber, said in a statement that the announcement is an important and positive step forward for the industry to keep it globally competitive.

“The extension of reduced import duties on car parts for the next five years means not just greater cost competitiveness for companies assembling vehicles in the U.S. but also much-needed stability and clarity for an industry that has been rocked by just the opposite for several years now,” Stevens said in a statement.

He said MichAuto continues to support the extension of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which will be reviewed starting next year.

“By strengthening, not scrapping, this historically successful trade agreement that was first struck during President Donald Trump’s first term in office, we can create an even stronger North American trading bloc, ready to compete with China at every turn,” Stevens said.
